AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an elective class in the Salt Lake City School District secondary schools designed to help underserved, first generation college –bound students with high academic potential participate in rigorous course work in preparation for entrance to colleges and universities. Students receive support through tutoring by trained tutors and a proven curriculum based on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration and Reading (WICR).
Who Are the AVID Tutors, and What Do They Do?AVID tutors are college students who receive training in methodologies used in AVID: writing, collaboration, inquiry, and reading. They are in the classroom weekly to serve as models and to help students achieve success in rigorous classes. They are trained not to give students answers but rather to guide them toward answers.
