Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Resources
In School Supports
-
School counselors are available to meet with students one-on-one to provide social emotional support. Counselors offer a safe space to talk, help with developing coping skills, and connecting them with additional resources when needed. They also collaborate with families, teachers, and staff to support student well-being and success.
- Reach out to your school counselor by email to schedule an appointment or stop by the counseling center.

School Social Worker
*If you are interested please see your school counselor for a referral form*
My name is Jessica, and I have the absolute privilege to be Highland's school Social Worker. Here at Highland, I meet with students individually, run groups, connect with teachers and students for classroom skills building, manage crisis situations with students, and support teachers and staff with any mental health needs as they arise. My passion is helping others normalize having mental health needs, accepting support, and strengthening themselves to be confident in facing whatever life throws at them.I have loved working with teenagers for many years, not only as a therapist but in many other roles. In all of my time working with teens, I have learned that listening and allowing them to be the experts of their lives makes a huge difference in supporting them. I have a client-centered and trauma-informed approach, which just means that I let the client direct the ship, keeping in mind all of the nuances that any trauma they may have experienced can affect them. I focus on using training that is backed up by research and that, I know, has a history of being effective. I have worked in many settings: private practice, non-profits, homeless services, afterschool clubs, the justice system, schools, and treatment centers: out-patient, day-treatment, and residential.
Outside of work, I get to play house with a loving husband while we raise 3 amazing kids. We have a flock of ducks and a dog that helps to keep things interesting, along with being active in our community with block parties and weekends camping in the mountains. I love to take time being creative with my current love being pottery and making all the crafty things. If I am not at work, you will likely find me cozy in a blanket with a book during the colder months or sitting on a porch enjoying the sights and sounds of nature (quacking ducks included) during any days with temps above 65.
Odyssey House Therapist
Odyssey House has partnered with Highland High School and the school district to provide mental health services to students. Weekly individual therapy sessions are provided at the school for students. Odyssey House accepts all types of insurance, including Medicaid. There is no out-of-pocket cost to the student's family, even if their insurance usually requires a copay, or if the student doesn’t have health insurance. This service is for students that are interested in therapy to assist in managing mental health or substance use concerns. To refer a student to this service please contact your school counselor.

School counselors visit 10th grade health classes to provide suicide prevention education. The lesson focuses on recognizing warning signs, how to respond and support others, and how to seek help for yourself or a friend. Students are also introduced to available school and community resources.
