Advanced Placement (AP)

Advanced Placement (AP)

After successfully passing an end-of-year advanced placement college examination, college credit may be awarded by colleges and universities. The amount of credit varies from institution to institution. Be sure to check with your college of interest to determine their acceptance policy. AP Courses at Highland High School will only carry if the demand is great enough.  All students signing up for AP courses are expected to commit to the course for the full year and expected to take the AP exam in the spring. College credit may be awarded to students who successfully pass the AP exam. Students should check to see if the college/university they plan to attend offers credit for AP courses and if so, how much credit.

Why AP?

AP CollegeBoard Information

  • Stand Out to Colleges: “AP” on your high school transcript shows colleges you're motivated to succeed, and taking the exam demonstrates your commitment to tackle and complete college-level work.
  • Earn College Credit and Placement: Your AP score could earn you college credits before you even set foot on campus. In fact, most AP students who enroll in four-year colleges start school with some credit.

All Advanced Placement (AP) courses and descriptions are listed in our Course Catalog

AP ExamsMost AP Exams are 2–3 hours long. The first part of the exam usually consists of multiple-choice questions.

  • You will choose 1 of 4–5 answer choices for each question.
  • Your total exam score on the multiple-choice section is based only on the number of questions answered correctly. You won’t receive or lose points for incorrect answers or unanswered questions.

The second part of the exam usually consists of free-response questions that require you to generate your own responses. Depending on the exam, your responses could be in the form of an essay, a solution to a problem, or a spoken response.

Students taking AP exams will need to have each test payment made by the first week in November. Fee Waiver does apply! Students who have an approved fee waiver need to check in with treasurer to let him know which tests they will be taking.

Current Deadlines ($99 per AP test):

  • In-person payments with Highland Treasurer: Friday, November 7, 2025 by 3:30pm
  • Online payments via My School Fees: Sunday, November 9, 2025 by 10:00pm
